In 1969 while the triumphs of greats Clemente, Aaron, Mantle and Mays were fresh in everyone’s minds, DiMaggio was voted by athletes and the sports press alike, as “The Greatest Living Ballplayer”. Among the giants of the sport who participated in the survey was Ted Williams, who said at the time, “Joe was simply the greatest player I ever saw, as well as the most graceful.”

It is that signature “grace” which has been so beautifully captured by the brush of Stephen Holland.

Beyond his masterful style in playing the sport, Joltin' Joe was best known for what some have called the greatest record ever earned, in a game that is made upof numbers. In 1941, DiMaggio achieved the feat of a 56-consecutive-game hitting streak, which set a new standard of perfection.

Holland has captured this very important part of the story as well. If you look carefully in the background of this painting you will find below his left elbow the 5th and 6th inning on the scoreboard subtly highlighted to create “56”. And if you add up the games score you will see it 4 to 1 (or better put ‘41).
